Computer System Support/Administrator

The High Energy Physics Group at Imperial College London invites applications for a computing system support/administrator to support the group's core computing and Grid infrastructure.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has been taking data for the last two years. The volumes of data produced are so large that they cannot be analysed at a single data centre; instead they are being distributed to computer centres around the world over a computational Grid. Imperial College is part of this Grid. This Grid provides a general infrastructure usable by many different scientific disciplines.

You will work both to support the group's core computing services and the Grid development and support team. The group is about 140 people strong and needs the core services required to be one of the world's leading High Energy Physics research groups. We are also one of the largest university based Grid sites in the UK and have a key role in supporting both the LHC experiments and other experiments in which we are involved.

A degree in a relevant subject area or equivalent qualification (e.g. certified computing engineers) is desirable but not essential provided that there is sufficient evidence of appropriate experience. Experience of administrating, preferably large, Linux systems (ideally clusters) and the installation and management of common packages such as mail servers, databases, web servers, installation tools etc is essential. Experience with Grid computing would be beneficial but is in no way essential and is less important than strong system administration experience which is essential. You should also have a strong desire to contribute to the exciting and innovative experiments and projects of the group and have experience of supporting user communities. The ability to work within a team environment is also essential.
